KENYA: Environmentalists in Kenya are constructing the world’s first dhow made entirely from plastic waste collected in the beaches of Indian Ocean.

In 2018 when the boat will be complete, it will sail from Lamu to Capetown South Africa a 5000 km journey . According to Mr Ben Morrison who is the project Leader building and sailing the plastic boat will highlight the need to conserve the environment through better use of plastics.

Plastics are a major pollutant of world oceans ,reports have it that by 2050 we may have more plastics than fish in the oceans. ‘’Flip Flopi boat is a brilliant idea, through this and other initiatives we shall save our oceans from plastics that take eternity to degrade’’ said Cypriano Chagina Ogoti an environmental activist.

This project comes hot on heals just when the government of Kenya banned manufacture, importation and use of plastic bags and this is indeed a step in the right direction for many .Mr Julius Koech an environmentalist based in Nakuru says other countries should emulate Kenya to curb plastic pollution.

‘’i support plastic ban, i support recycling and reusing of plastics ‘’ says Julius Koech
